The Last To Vanish by Megan Miranda

The Last To Vanish is Megan Miranda’s latest thriller. It drops in late July. You can also find reviews for some of Miranda’s previous YA and adult thrillers here on the blog. The Last To Vanish is a taut, climactic, and intriguing thriller that you won’t be able to put down.

Cutter’s Pass, NC, is a town with a history of tourists vanishing into the surrounding forest never to be seen nor heard from again. Landon West, a journalist who arrived in Cutter’s Pass to investigate these mysterious disappearances, came to town on the trail of Farrah Jordan, a woman who disappeared from the hiking trails surrounding the town four years previously. She was the fifth to disappear while visiting the town over the past three decades. And then Landon becomes the sixth. All vanish. None are heard from or seen again, and no clues are left behind as to their fates. When Landon West’s brother strolls into the Passage Inn late one night, Abby immediately recognizes him and instead of turning him away, she rents him Cabin 4—the same cabin his brother rented when he stayed in Cutter’s Pass. Abby has no way of knowing the series of events this decision will catalyze, but this story, like most of Miranda’s thrillers, has a way of unsuspectingly proceeding before suddenly whipping off into one twist or another.

Abby, herself a transplant having lived and worked at Passage Inn for the last decade, is still regarded as an outsider by the town’s insular residents. And when Trey West rolls into town, the man sets in motion a series of revelations and emotions that unsettles the townsfolk, causing them to close ranks concerning the disappearances that have left many in the town scarred and doubting their neighbors. But Abby is determined to finally uncover the truth of what’s really haunting Cutter’s Pass, no matter the consequences or who might be responsible. Instead the more she digs, the more questions Abby unearths and the more evidence is uncovered that reveals all the disappeared may have had ties to the Inn.

The series of events set in motion by Trey’s arrival in town barrels towards a terrifying, tense confrontation with a killer that the town’s insularity has allowed to hide among them for so long.
